Hello, Modeski is the one who has roped/encouraged me in I am a 39yo, Linux geek, mother of 5, active in the FOSS community, left leaning red headed barefoot vegetarian Australian hippyish type, with both leftist and conservative views. Why both? Because nothing is that simple, and I refuse to vote along 'accepted'lines on any isue. All should be thought through on individual merits.

Welcome aboard, timelady? Not a Dr Who fan by any chance? As for being a 39yo, Linux geek, mother of 5, active in the FOSS community, left leaning red headed barefoot vegetarian Australian hippyish type, with both leftist and conservative views... I think that makes you a disgraceful stereotype. Vegetarian indeed! (Actually, I'm kind of a veggie too. Except when I eat meat.) Seriously, I think what you say about individual merits is absolutely right and healthy. I've sometimes used the term 'spectrum politics' precisely because I get so sick of socialists choosing a left-wing policy just because it's left wing, and conservatives choosing a right-wing policy just because it's right wing. I lean to the left far more than the right in general, but circumstances are always more important than doctrine. Much respect!

I lean to the left far more than the right in general, but circumstances are always more important than doctrine. Much respect! more an obsessive than a fan;) but my irl name also happens to be romana, so whats a girl to do? both my hubby and i like tilting at windmills. hes a firefighter and a freebsd geek. his card for membership of the greens sits next to his chainsaw license, so he can chop down trees in the national park:) I'm a vegetarian who would not hesitate to hunt for her family. because I could kill ethically, culling as required in the wild (rabbits, anyone?), not in a charnelhouse of fear, with hormonally and antibiotic ally filled terrified beasts. meritocracy is unfortunately a lost art. now it party political lines, or the even more banal indifference or apathy vote. vote because you have to. one can somewhat understand it - when you have a choice between tweedledum or tweedledummer (thanks, ani difranco great term!), then can we honestly say we have a choice? and how can we choose in a policy vacuum? both major parties in Australia, bereft of originality or vision, keeping neck and neck in their policies, until one doesn't feel able to adequately distinguish between them. party members so emeshed in the party political system, that buys their souls - um, sorry, 'loyalty', in return for safe seats. conscience votes - what a joke! party leaders 'allowing' conscience votes rarely - should not every decision be conscience based?

Sounds like you've found the ideal perspective for writing your first article. Give it a go!

I'd just like to extend my welcome to timelady, I reckon you will be a valuable addition to the TC crew. And you can share my horror at the political situation here. Ooh, and of course we can discuss the wonderful highbrow debate offered by such shows as A Current Affair and Today Tonight.
