Hunter S. Thompson, king of gonzo journalism and possibly the only man who could survive the horrendous levels of drug abuse that he's partaken in, takes a look into the workings behind the '72 US presidential campaign in this masterwork of unatural reporting. For those of you with an interest in the dark times of Nixon and the most awful Democrat campaign in history, this book is certain to prove very enlightening.
For Thompson, there is no such thing as 'off the record.' He's brutally honest and often harshly accurate in his predictions, and shines a light on the dark underbelly of the US political system, revealing the treachery and the betrayal in a starkly open fashion that no other political journalist would ever consider. Filled with dark humour and not always totally easy to read, the book has to be one of the few unbiased reports of any election campaign ever released in the states, and, perhaps most amazingly, was originally part of Rolling Stone magazine. Thompson is clearly exceptionally well informed, and despite not being a very nice person and being followed by clamities where-ever he roams, his style is unmistakable and oddly likable. I would recommend this to anyone who really wants to see how the US election system works, and how the politicians behave 'off the record'.

I've finally managed to finish reading this one (not easy, as Thompson's a very, shall we say, erratic writer), and I do recommend it, although I still prefer Franken's style.
