Al Franken is one of the finest satirists in modern America. A tremendously funny man and one at the cutting edge of modern political commentary.
I just finished reading his latest fantastic book, Lies And The Lying Liars Who Tell Them: A Fair And Balanced Look At The Right. It's a terrifically hard-edged, accurate and searing indictment of the right-wing media in the USA and the spin in Republican politics. Its crushing body blows at GWB and Fox News are so great that FNC tried to get it banned from publication... and were laughed out of court. LITERALLY.
I can't recommend any book of political analyses more wholeheartedly than this one. It's hilarious in its jibes, ruthless in its (very fair) criticisms, and poignant in its outrage at some of the more sickening and amoral transgressions at large in modern US politics.

I'm reading this at the moment. It's very funny and I like it, but it's not quite off-the-wall enough for my tastes to be declared a downright classic. I get the Feeling Storm can just cut-and-paste this post and change a couple of words if he wants to reply to my 'Fear and Loathing' thread though, so possibly these two books could cover the whole range.
