Just to follow up the in-depth and close analysis of the decline of Republican supremacy in the USA on the following thread... thegreatcritic.proboards24.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=1162990749...I'd just like to add my innermost philosophical musings on the spectacular pounding the Liberal (HAH!) Party took in yesterday's Australian General Election, which not only saw the far-too-long-awaited removal of John Howard from the position of Prime Minister, but also saw him losing his seat in the House altogether! Here, then, is my analysis; - HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!! STUFF THAT UP YOUR NEO-LIBERAL, RIGHT-WING, RACIST BUTT-HOLES!!!!!!!!! WOOHOOHOOHOOHOOHOOHOOHOOOOOO!!!!! Any bit of that I haven't made clear, please let me know and it will be my very great pleasure to repeat it in full. Congratulations to new PM, Labor Party leader Kevin Rudd, by the way. For getting rid of the unacceptable face of neo-Nazism alone, the world owes you a huge debt. news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/7109692.stm

I'll be putting together a Downs Under column on this in the next day or two, but I just thought as the resident Aussie-dweller I should chime in and say that I'm over the f**k**g moon. The poll results have been indicating a landslide (or a 'Ruddslide') as The Age dubbed it, but many fingers had been crossed until the results actually came through.
There was a great letter posted in that paper yesterday. For the life of me I can't find it on their site, but the writer talked about how Saturday's vote was a clarion call for change. A change from divisive, racist and narrow-minded politics. A call for more accountability in government, action on global warming, long-term thinking, respect for human rights and restoring faith in our country. In short it was nothing less than a resounding victory for those of us who yearn for a new type of politics.
There is a long road ahead, but finally, joyously we have some hope for the future. I firmly believe we will see the same sea-change in America next year. This really is history in the making, and I'm truly excited to be here as it happens.

Confirmation has come through that Howard has lost his seat in Parliament. It just sounds too good to be true!
